LITERACY AND NUMERACY: THE NEUROSCIENCE OF LEARNING

ALL STAFF IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS INCLUDING SCHOOL AND CURRICULUM LEADERS, CLASSROOM TEACHERS, SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATORS, AND SCHOOL ASSISTANTS

PRESENTED BY DR DONNA NITSCHKE, TEACHER AND EDUCATIONAL NEUROSCIENTIST

This workshop is intended for all school staff working with students or involved in planning, program or policy development for literacy and numeracy development. The workshop will provide information about: how the brain approaches reading, including considerations of dyslexia and hyperlexia; the range of reading intervention programs currently available which use neuroscience research as a basis; how the brain approaches mathematics with particular emphasis on the Big Ideas in Number and Professor Di Siemon’s work; recommended approaches to teaching aspects of Number with special consideration for building multiplicative thinking.

Learning outcomes for this workshop include:

  • a better understanding of the cognitive processes recruited when learning to read and the available programs and interventions using a neuroscience-based approach
  • a broader range of pedagogical tools for supporting positive literacy outcomes for students
  • a better understanding of the cognitive processed required to build numeracy skills
  • a broader range of pedagogical tools for supporting positive numeracy outcomes for students
