COMMUNICATION IN THE EARLY YEARS: SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY WITH LITTLE ONES

ALL STAFF IN EARLY LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS INCLUDING CHILD CARE, EARLY LEARNING CENTRES, KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL AND EARLY JUNIOR PRIMARY LEVELS

PRESENTED BY LIBERTY GATES, SPEECH PATHOLOGIST

This workshop is intended for all staff working with children up to 7 years of age. The workshop explores how to enrich learning experiences for all children including those who have a disability, developmental delay or those who are experiencing difficulties in learning.

Note: Please bring some popular resources from your centre to use as a basis for planning speech, language and literacy activities. Toys, games and books will be helpful.

Learning outcomes for this workshop include:

  • Is a child’s speech and language on track? Learn how speech and language normally develop.
  • Where do things go wrong? Learn about speech and language disorders, and what those ‘speech pathology phrases’ in reports actually mean.
  • Why is this child struggling to learn to read? Learn how speech and language disorders affect early literacy.
  • How do I know if a child is likely to have difficulties learning to read? Learn how to use two downloadable screening tests (phonological awareness and decoding).
  • How do I help kids with their speech, language and early literacy skills? Learn techniques to help kids develop in each of these areas. (Kids with difficulties, and also those with normal development.)
  • How to use your own resources from your centre to target speech, language or early literacy
