Early Years (3-8) Workshop - 30 May 2017

Supporting Reading Development in the Early Years
Dr Karyn Carson, Speech Pathologist, Flinders University

This workshop is designed for educators who work with children in the early years, specifically with children aged 3 to 8 years.  The workshop explores how to enrich learning experiences for all children including those who have a disability, developmental delay or those who are experiencing difficulties in learning.

Participants will be required to engage in interactive case-based scenarios designed to review, practice and apply a selection of key assessment methodologies, as well as practical instructional strategies, for several skills known to support both pre-reading and beginning reading development.

Critical questions that will be addressed include:

  • What instructional methods are best suited in the areas of pre-reading and early reading development for both typically developing and at-risk students?
  • What assessment tools can I use to measure phonological awareness, letter-knowledge, and vocabulary skills?
  • What instructional methods are best suited in the areas of pre-reading and early reading development for both typically developing and at-risk students in the 3- to 8- year age range?
  • How can I critically review assessment tools and instructional strategies?

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to use and apply a selection of evidence-based assessment tools that measure pre-reading and beginning reading development
  • Appropriately select instructional based on assessment results
  • Learn to critically review assessment instruments and instructional strategies using evidence-based appraisal methods
  • Gain confidence in selecting and using tools and strategies in your own educational context.
