PRESENTED BY LIBERTY GATES, SPEECH PATHOLOGIST

This workshop is intended for all staff working with students with limited communication. Key Word Signing may be used to facilitate communication for students whose spoken language is not easily understood (eg children with severe speech or language disorders, children with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, etc). Key Word Signing can also be used to help children with limited understanding to better comprehend language. It will be useful for staff working with very young children, up to older students with limited verbal communication. The workshop will be most useful for staff who will have the ability practice the key word signs with students or other staff in the weeks following the workshop. The workshop is practical and highly participatory, making it a lot of fun. Participants are highly encouraged to bring along toys, books or activities that they use with students to practice incorporating signing in their practice.

Due to the nature of the practical instruction attendance for this workshop will be strictly limited. Registrations will close when capacity is reached.

Learning outcomes for this workshop include:

  • Learning approximately 150 Auslan signs
  • Understanding the benefits and usefulness of using Key Word Signing
  • Planning a core vocabulary for children with limited communication

Certificates will be provided that include reference to the Teacher Standards that apply to this workshop:

ü  Standard 1.6: Strategies to support full participation of students with disability

ü  Standard 3.5: Use effective classroom communication
