WHAT'S 'DYS' ALL ABOUT? UNDERSTANDING LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AND DISABILITIES

PRESENTED BY HELEN BROOMHALL, CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST

This workshop is suitable for staff who are working in primary schools across the three education sectors in South Australia. This includes school and curriculum leaders, classroom teachers, special education coordinators, counsellors, wellbeing coordinators and school assistants. It is an ideal opportunity for a team to attend to enhance the implementation of strategies in the school environment. It is interactive with a practical focus and will include:

  • Early warning signs in the primary years
  • Specific Learning disorders – dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia and more
  • Related difficulties such as attention, working memory and executive function
  • Understanding psychoeducational assessment reports
  • Myth-busting and misconceptions
  • Current research and practice
  • Underlying processing problems- recognising them and what to do about them
  • Understanding the impacts on children’s emotional wellbeing and resilience
  • Practical suggestions and resources to use in the classroom environment.
