THE NEUROPSYCHOLOGY OF TRAUMA

ALL STAFF - PRIMARY AND SECONDARY

PRESENTED BY DR DONNA NITCHSKE, EDUCATIONAL NEUROSCIENTIST IN THE CLASSROOM, DECD

“Trauma is not the event but the reaction to the event. A traumatic reaction is one where the body’s primitive defence mechanisms are activated – stress hormones flood the system as the person prepares for fight, flight or freeze. We are beginning to understand that repeated trauma responses, without the chance of recovery in between, are what most likely leads to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder” Dr Nicole Milburn, Clinical Psychologist and Infant Mental Health Consultant.

This workshop is suitable for all pre-school and school-based staff who work with students who have experienced trauma, especially during their early years of life. Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding the effects that early childhood trauma can have on the developing brain
  • An awareness of how these effects can impact learning
  • Understanding the importance of attachment and trust to social interactions
  • The exploration of a range of adaptations and management approaches that can support teachers and students when dealing with students with a trauma background within a classroom
