Supporting Phonological Awareness and Early Reading Development in primary schools
Dr Karyn Carson, Speech Pathologist, Flinders University

This workshop is designed for curriculum leaders and special education co-ordinators who are seeking knowledge and skills in how to design evidence-based phonological awareness and early reading approaches across their primary classrooms, and for children requiring specialist educational support.  Participants will be required to engage in a series of activities and case-based scenarios designed to support understanding of evidence-based assessment and instructional reading strategies focused on key skills such as phonological awareness, word decoding fluency and vocabulary.  A particular focus will be on discussing how participants can screen, monitor, assess and instruct in these key skills across year levels in the junior primary classrooms.  How to support students with specific reading needs within this model will also be discussed.

Critical questions that will be addressed include:

  • How can we assess key reading skills such as phonological awareness, word decoding fluency, and vocabulary in a systematic fashion and how are the needs of individuals who need specific support catered for within such a model?
  • What methods can be used to critically review the way we are currently assessing and instructing in key reading skills.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Appropriately select evidence-based instructional strategies, based on assessment results, to support early reading development in key skills such as phonological awareness, word decoding fluency and vocabulary
  • Understand how to select evidence-based assessment tools that can measure early reading development at various stages in the primary years
  • Understand how to select and use both assessment tools and instructional methods best suited to the needs of children with specific needs when learning to read
  • Understand how to critically review assessment and instructional approaches to early reading development to identify areas of growth.
