Donna Cross is a Winthrop Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Western Australia and the Telethon Kids Institute. Donna is involved in many applied research intervention programs in Australia and internationally to improve children and young people’s health and wellbeing. In 2012, Donna was Western Australia’s Australian of the Year for her services to children’s health and in 2017 was awarded a Churchill Fellowship.

Donna has an international reputation for developing community-based interventions to reduce bullying and aggression among young people. Her work has culminated in the dissemination of an evidence-based program called ‘Friendly Schools Plus’ to over 3,000 Australian schools and schools in the USA, UK and Scandinavia.

In 2016 Donna presented for Learning 4 All, a highly successful workshop on promoting social and emotional health in schools. This included the introduction of The 10 Stage Pastoral Care Action Plan which is a tool to assist schools in reviewing their pastoral care strengths and needs to develop a plan for improvement. Donna has been invited back to South Australia review this tool in more detail and explore staff wellbeing.

In conjunction with the Pastoral Care Action Plan, this dynamic presentation will focus on:

  • Assessing and enhancing school culture and student engagement
  • Reviewing whole-school actions schools can take to enhance student wellbeing (both online & offline)
  • Classroom management to protect and promote students’ social and emotional wellbeing
  • Actions to enable students to enhance whole-school pastoral care
  • Strategies to build staff wellbeing.

This workshop is suitable for staff who are working in primary and secondary schools across the three education sectors in South Australia. This includes school and curriculum leaders, classroom teachers, special education coordinators, counsellors, wellbeing coordinators and school assistants. It is an ideal opportunity for a team to attend to enhance the implementation of strategies in the school environment.
