Why Doesn't Learning Stick? - Exploring Working Memory and Emotional Regulation for Primary Students

The workshop is suitable for teachers, including classroom, special education teachers and coordinators who are working in primary mainstream schools across the three education sectors in SA. It will explore how to enrich learning experiences for all children including those who have a disability, developmental delay or those who are experiencing difficulties in learning. It is interactive with a practical focus and will include:

  1. Information and practical strategies about:
  • Children’s motivators for learning
  • Emotional wellbeing and how it relates to learning
  • Responding to emotion and behaviours - exploring emotional control adaptability and impulse control
  • Reducing stress for children in the junior primary and primary setting
  • How to develop and implement plans for individual “high needs” situations
  • Upskilling learning skills to improve memory, focus, attention, organization, time management, planning and sequencing.

  1. Workshop Outcomes:
  • Participants will have an understanding of the difficulties children face and how it affects learning
  • Participants will develop practical skills to use with children
  • A workbook for future use will be provided.

Making My Classroom Work: Developing Student Organisation, Self Management and Behaviour to Access Learning Effectively

The workshop explores how to enrich learning experiences for all primary school children including those who have a disability, developmental delay or those who are experiencing difficulties in learning. It is interactive with a practical focus and will include:

Information and practical strategies about:

  • Common obstacles/barriers to attentive learning
  • How to develop organisation, self management and attentive behaviour in your students
  • Identifying ways to support students that benefit everyone in the class
  • Reflecting on your well established teaching style to identify what you could do differently

Resources:

  • Develop a “Learning Motivator Plan” that is specific to your classroom
  • Review a range of resources that promote appropriate organisation and self management skill

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to identify student primary learning motivators and styles
  • Unpack learning motivators and strategies for individual students
  • Use this information to create a whole class plan/approach

** Participants are required to bring their class list (first names only) so that it can be used to create a Learning Motivator Plan which is relevant to each particpants class.

Student Wellbeing and Resilience
Professor Donna Cross, WA

In 2016 Donna presented a workshop for Learning 4 All on promoting social and emotional health and introduced the 10 Stage Pastoral Care Action Plan as a tool to assist schools in reviewing their pastoral care processes. This year Donna will further explore this resource and participants who heard Donna last year as well as new participants are invited to attend.

This dynamic presentation will focus on:

  • Pastoral care processes from a whole school community perspective
  • Maintaining and reviewing staff and student wellbeing
  • Strategies to encourage self-reflection among staff
  • The importance of progressive communication and engagement with community members
  • Provision of sufficient resources to monitor implementation and effectiveness

This workshop is suitable for staff who are working in primary and secondary schools across the three education sectors in South Australia. This includes school and curriculum leaders, classroom teachers, special education coordinators, counsellors, wellbeing coordinators and school assistants. It is an ideal opportunity for a team to attend to enhance the implementation of strategies in the school environment.
