RELIEF TEACHER SKILL BUILDING AND NETWORKING EVENT

ALL RELIEF STAFF IN JUNIOR PRIMARY, PRIMARY, MIDDLE, SECONDARY SCHOOLS & SPECIAL EDUCATION SETTINGS - EVENING SESSION

FACILITATORS - MEL WHITE, RELIEF TEACHER & KYMBERLY LOUISE, BEHAVIOURAL SCIENTIST

This is a unique event designed to support relief teaching staff in multiple aspects of securing and providing quality relief work. In place of a traditional presentation style, this workshop will facilitate participants to rotate through stations where various aspects of relief teaching will be addressed through brainstorming & sharing of experiences and strategies.

Upon registration, participants will be emailed with a link to a survey where they can nominate their areas of interest. The stations will then be set up to reflect the interests of the participants. These may include topics for Early Career relief teachers (e.g. ‘How to get relief work’ and ‘what to find out when starting at a new school’) through to more practical aspects of teaching such as ‘what to do if no notes have been left’, and always useful tips on supporting cooperative behaviour in the relief teaching context.

In an attempt to make this event as accessible and affordable as possible for relief teachers, we have incorporated these aspects into our planning of the event:

• This will be an evening session (to avoid having to miss a day of potential work)
• This event will not be catered (in order to keep costs down for those not attached to schools)
• It will be held at the most central venue we were able to access (that also has parking facilities)

Certificates will be provided that include reference to the Teacher Standards that apply to this workshop.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION: MODIFYING THE CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS AT THE PRE-FOUNDATION LEVEL

STAFF IN JUNIOR PRIMARY AND SPECIAL EDUCATION SETTINGS - including leadership, special education and subject coordinators, classroom teachers and support staff - TWILIGHT SESSION

PRESENTER - RACHEL SCHUEBOECK, PROJECT OFFICER LEARNING DIFFICULTIES, SPECIAL EDUCATION RESOURCE UNIT

This workshop is intended for all school staff working with students or involved in supporting student with significant disabilities. The workshop will provide information about Abilities Based learning and Education Support (ABLES) which is an assessment, curriculum and resource suite, developed in collaboration with the Victorian Education Department and the University of Melbourne. The introduction of ABLES in SA during 2018/19 came about after a 2-year trial and has been led by teachers working in special education. The assessment is supporting teachers who traditionally have very few assessment tools to gauge their student’s improvement in the working towards foundation level. It unpacks the foundation level of the Australian Curriculum into 4 sequential and sequenced steps to support teachers in their planning for student to achieve.

STRATEGIES FOR WORKING SIDE BY SIDE THAT ARE NOT JUST BAND-AIDING

SSOS & TUTORS IN JUNIOR PRIMARY, MIDDLE, SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND SPECIAL EDUCATION SETTINGS - SCHOOL HOLIDAY TWILIGHT SESSION

PRESENTER - ROBYN WHITTLE-HUGHES, OWNER, READY4SUCCESS

This workshop is intended for those who want to strengthen their own skills based practice so that they can build independence and a love of learning in children with individual learning differences in the unique and privileged situation of side by side or 1:1, rather than the classroom setting.

This workshop will provide information about:

1. Identifying Auditory Processing and Working Memory difficulties
2. The link between AP and WM and many identifiable learning difficulties and disabilities
3. Gathering base-line data and working from there to make a real difference
4. Strategies and skills to teach in a 1:1 setting to develop independent learner skills.

Learning outcomes for this workshop include:

• Skills to identify a child with Auditory Processing and Working Memory difficulties
• Skills to identify, using evidence-based assessments, explicit skill levels and gaps in learning
• Explicit skills and strategies to support children with a range of learning differences
• Confidence to deliver effective, targeted and progressive 1:1 skill-based intervention.

WORKING WITHIN THE SQUARE: SSO ROLE - LINKING THE CHILD, CURRICULUM, TEACHER AND SCHOOL

SCHOOL ASSISTANTS IN JUNIOR PRIMARY, PRIMARY, MIDDLE, SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND SPECIAL EDUCATION SETTINGS

PRESENTER - KYMBERLY LOUISE, BEHAVIOURAL SCIENTIST

This workshop will provide School Assistants with skills and strategies to promote learning and positive behaviour in students with additional learning needs, within the context of the School Assistant role. It is interactive with a practical focus and learning outcomes include:

• Developing an understanding of Best Practice for working with students with additional learning needs
• Skill building for developing participants’ own practice
• Skill building for session delivery with students
• Gaining an understanding of what can be achieved within the context of the ESO role
• Develop an understanding of functional behaviour and how to use that knowledge to support positive behaviour.

*Participants will be provided with free resources to use with students

ALL STAFF IIN KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL, JUNIOR PRIMARY, PRIMARY AND SPECIAL EDUCATION SETTINGS INCLUDING LEADERSHIP, SPECIAL EDUCATIN AND WELLBEING COORDINATORS, COUNSELLORS, CLASSROOM TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF

ALL STAFF IN HIGH SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS ARE WELCOME AS THE CONCEPTS CAN BE ADAPTED FOR THAT POPULATION, HOWEVER PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SECONDARY SETTINGS ARE NOT THE TARGETED POPULATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP

PRESENTER - DALE HEATH, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

This workshop will focus on learning and developing effective teaching plans to support classroom self-regulation skills. Additional information will be included on how to integrate supports for students who have more difficulty due to social, developmental, or disability related challenges. The workshop will be practical, interactive and adjusted to meet your learning goals.

Learning outcomes for this workshop include:

• Increased understanding of self-regulation skills and expectations
• Confidence in explaining the importance of teaching self-regulation within the curriculum
• Knowledge of practical whole class programming ideas to teach self-regulation
• Hands-on experience trying simple classroom strategies
• Understanding of core adaptations and strategies to support individual students with additional needs.
